intimate être
‘Etre’ means ‘to be’ or ‘being’ embracing the idea of humans as individuals, transcending labels, typecasts and prejudices.
Here, we introduce a 12 part portrait series. Captured in the homes of the subjects themselves, we see each individual in a vulnerable, unaffected state of being. Magali tells a story of each one, through the play of colour and light, creating striking contrasts and capturing moments of an uninhibited everyday.
This series is different from any of Magali’s previous work, making it a much anticipated show for her fans in Bangalore. This series is explicit in its support of freedom to create one’s own identity while shunning normative labels. As our world oscillates between acts of kindness and hatefulness, this series is a step closer to understanding, accepting & bringing people closer together.
The exhibition hopes to ally the audience with the works, creating life-size works for an engaging and immersive experience.
This show is not only to explore art outside the normative spectrum but also to introduce DDIR as a new creative space, open & welcoming to all.
Experimental, undefined, unseen, provocative, intriguing; An epiphany for its viewers, DDIR brings in work of any form, nature, dimension, shunning norms and societal traditions, typology or styles.
Fearless stories created purely to invoke the mind and conscience. We bring to you a new world of art.
ABOUT THE VENUE
DDIR Architecture Studio has been in existence since 2003, a firm conceptualised and created by Dominic Dube. Dube is an active patron of the arts in his hometown in Canada, and is now looking to extend his patronage within the art world of Bangalore. The studio sits on the top floor of Casa Andree in Shanti Nagar. The space is surrounded by a beautiful terrace garden which is being used for art exhibitions. Hereafter, this space shall be referred to as DDIR Art.
DDIR Art presents as an art gallery but our vision extends beyond labels. We bring to the spotlight work which evokes dialogue, experiences that create memories and conversations to tie them all together.
Today we see clearly more than ever, the trials and tribulations in the lives of our neighbours, our cities and our communities. The urge to move forward is restrained by the binds of the past. Through these dark times, from the pressure of oppression a diamond of courage is formed from the dirt beneath our feet. DDIR Art is the hand that angles the diamond to catch the light, spreading its iridescent light. At DDIR Art we endeavour to create a nurturing space for bold work and brave people, opening up a platform for the daring.
For upcoming creators and established visionaries alike, DDIR Art fosters an intimate nook on a terrace garden in the centre of the city. A space which welcomes the unseen, the unheard and the unrecognised, DDIR Art redraws the boundaries around our perceptions, challenging it through the medium of art.
At DDIR Art, dark is the new light.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Magali Couffon de Trevros is a photographer by nature. Although Magali has had a relationship with photography for many years, her excitement and passion for it grows everyday.
Her love for the art is fuelled by her adventurous soul. For Magali, photography is a lifeboat in a pool of negativity - it’s a release & a way to tell her story as well as the stories she sees unravel around her. She’s a keen observer of human nature and culture, documenting stories about people, places and lives.
“I love its flexibility and its unlimited options of light play, I love colour and composition, I also love its proximity,”.
Having played with numerous mediums, they ultimately inform her understanding of photography. Experiments with graphic art, painting and illustration have given her a rather unique understanding of composition, colour, light and scene as is visible in her work.
In her latest series ‘Etre’ she is putting up a fight against labels. Her goal was not the end product but the actual process; 12 encounters, 12 portraits, 12 stories.
“It s all about how imperfect we all are, how we need to heal and accept that we are only humans. Everything else has failed so let’s try Art!”
The new series stands apart from her other work with its outspoken tone, rejecting stereotypes and normative labels, opening ourselves up to fluid identities and freedom, love & acceptance.
